Video Games and Violent Extremism: A Law Enforcement/Intelligence Approach

Overview:

On May 27th 2024, We were honored to have contributed to the successful Expert Group Meeting on "Video Games and Violent Extremism: A Law Enforcement/Intelligence Approach," which took place yesterday in the vibrant city of Rabat, Morocco. This significant event was graciously hosted by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) in collaboration with the Kingdom of Morocco. The meeting served as a crucial platform for addressing the growing concerns around the exploitation of video gaming platforms by violent extremists.

Participants:

The meeting brought together over two dozen esteemed experts from intelligence and law enforcement agencies across Africa. Representatives attended from Somalia, Senegal, Nigeria, Chad, Morocco, Kenya, Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, and Libya. Their collective expertise and commitment to counter-terrorism efforts were instrumental in the event’s success.

National Response Model on Countering Extremism:

We had the privilege of presenting our National Response Model on Countering Online Extremism, developed in 2023. We showcased this comprehensive model to the distinguished group, emphasizing actionable steps that stakeholders could adopt to combat online extremism broadly and within the context of video games specifically. For those interested in exploring the model further, it is available here.

Throughout the roundtable, participants engaged in deep and insightful discussions on several critical topics:

  • Emerging threats in gaming and adjacent spaces

  • Global trends and case studies

  • Policy and regulatory responses

  • Best practices for national response models

  • Implications for law enforcement and intelligence agencies

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants for their contributions and commitment to fostering a safer digital environment. Together, we took significant steps towards forging a future without extremism.
